Bush 7, Axis of Weasels 1

Bush in cowboy hatIs it OK to gloat now?

Since President Bush was elected, a favorite criticism from Democrats and other liberals has been that we’re hated by the rest of the world because we’ve got this go-it-alone, simplisme cowboy running our country. Enlightened socialist leaders (particularly those in France, Germany, and Spain–aka The Axis of Weasels) have delighted in trash-talking the US and Bush while doing their best to undermine the War on Terror.

Now it’s time to evaluate what their nuanced strategy has accomplished:

Elections resulting in a Bush win

  • John Howard re-elected for an historic fourth term in 2004
  • Hamid Karzai elected in 2004 in Afghanistan’s first democratic election
  • George Bush re-elected in 2004 in an election that leaves Republicans in control of Congress, the Senate, most state governorships, and with an excellent chance to reshape the Supreme Court
  • Iraq holds first democratic election in its history in 2005
  • Tony Blair re-elected for an historic third term in 2005
  • Junichiro Koizumi and his LDP party in 2005 win a landslide mandate
  • Angela Merkel beats Gerhard Schroeder today and thus one of the back-stabbing, America-bashing members of the Axis of Weasels goes down to defeat!

Elections resulting in an Axis of Weasels win

  • Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero wins election as Spanish voters capitulate to Al-Qaeda
  • I think that’s it for the weasels… Oh wait, there was that vote for the E.U. constitution that Chirac wanted to win so badly–well actually the weasels lost that one too. But, hey, at least Chirac’s still in office. . . for now.

[Edit] Welcome InstaPundit readers! Settle in and stay awhile.

[Edit] Commenter Andrea Walden informs me that “Fogh Rasmussen, Prime Minister of Denmark, has also been re-elected, and they have had about 500 or so troops in Iraq.” So now it’s Bush 8, AoW 1.

[Edit] Score one for the AoW! Norway’s Jens Stoltenberg won election last week, so the tally is Bush 8, AoW 2 (hat tip to commenters Finnpundit & George). And thanks also to Pixy Misa for pointing out that Howard won his fourth term, not third (since corrected).

Upon seeing that pic of the Axis of Weasels, on your site, the phrase that comes to mind...though hand join in hand, the wicked will not go unpunished.

I think calling the German election a win for Bush or for German-American relations is a tad optimistic. I would call it a draw at best.

Hi GermanyWatcher,

The win for Bush comes from Schroeder losing! And Merkel seems, if not pro-American, a lot less hostile toward us than Gerhard was.

Hi Eric,

Thanks for that quote! I'm adding it to the graphic's description on Flickr.

Merkel had a much poorer showing than expected, though -- Again, this is akin to calling the 2004 re-election of Bush a 'strong win' or a 'mandate', when in reality it's much narrower than that.

I think someone needs to understand that a win equals a win, no matter how it's sliced. A draw means that neither won or lost, and Schroeder definitely lost.

To that list must be added the reelection of Japan's militant pro-American PM Koizumi, whose popularity has soared despite his decision to send Japanese troops abroad in support of American military action in Afghanistan and Iraq.

You forgot one--Fogh Rasmussen, Prime Minister of Denmark, has also been re-elected, and they have had about 500 or so troops in Iraq, although they didn't send troops to Iraq until the end of the war.

Shouldn't the Afghani election make it 8 to 1?

One anti-war country that (sadly) re-elected it's idiot prime minister is mine - Canada. That being said, Paul Martin's party (Liberals) were pretty beaten up, and lost their majority status.

You've also forgotten the recent socialist win in Norway; the new prime minister plans to pull Norway's troops out of Iraq - all 20 of them.

But hey, that's still 8 to 2 in Bush's favor.

Some of those references are completely out of context. The Aghan elections were a mockery of democracy, the opposition was split into hundreds of different factions, mostly along regional lines. Moreover, the polling sites were largely un-monitored.

Japan has been ruled by the LDP for fifty years. They control the patronage in the rural areas, and despite Koizumi's reformist approach, they are not reformers.

Tony Blair wasn't re-elected. His party maintained their majority, and barely. They lost almost 100 seats in parliament. The vast majority of Brits were against the Iraq war and they showed it at the polls. The only people who actually voted for Blair were the people from his actual district. If the Republicans lose five seats in the House in 2006, Dennis Hastert hasn't WON, even though he'd still be speaker.

Yes he was. Like it or not, he was re-elected.

Yeah, you forgot Poland! Errr, I mean Norway!

The Weasels, unfortunately, won in Norway, and will be pulling their small contingent of soldiers out by December.

Hi Finnpundit & George,

You're right, I forgot about Norway (it's because I always think of them as "North Denmark").

You can't count Afghanistan twice so that's 7-2. You can't count Britain because there wasn't an anti-American candidate (Kennedy doesn't count) so that's 6-2. Germany's still too close to call so that's 5-2 at the moment. I think you forgot about Iran, but that's was certainly a weasel win, 5-3

New Zealand is too close to call, but the anti-American Labour is leading the poodle National Party. It could be 5-5 by the end of the week.

I still don't think this counts as a win. OK, Schroeder is gone. Sure, Merkel is better (if she ends up becoming Chancellor).
BUT...the three parties of the left out performed the two parties of the right.
BUT...the most anti-American party in Germany (the Linkspartei) had an incredibly good showing, gaining more seats than anyone else (going from 2 to 50 something).
I'm not saying it's a loss. But a win?

Portugal withdrew its 145-strong contingent in February, immediately after an anti-Iraq-war Socialist was elected Prime Minister. That's another weasel win.

Um, no.

An anti-Western socialist party coming up from nothing to be a major shaker in Germany. Where have I heard that before. They have an Austrian in charge by any chance?

"The Aghan elections were a mockery of democracy"

Yes, Aghan elections were a farce. Any elections in a non-existent country usually are. (Hey, you are from Jersey? Any dead vote lately?) The AFGHAN elections on the other hand...
Yeah, pro-Americans won and women were allowed to vote. Sure there were some irregularities, they have been totalitarian fundamentalist for a long time and communist thugocracy before that!

"Tony Blair wasn't re-elected."

Then why is he still referred to as Prime Minister Blair and he lives at 10 Downing? You would think that the "new PM" would have him booted if that was the case.

You would concede that Paul "King of the Weasels" Martin won, despite the Liberal loss of majority; why not Blair?

Dear RJ, The NZ Labour Party is about as pink as Blair's Labour party.
And the opposition party was so blatantly dodging questions about their support for the US,it was hard to tell what they would do. They would have been better off being honest.
So what is the weasels score now anyway?
And as the LDP in Japan, huh. Japan is essentially a one party state. The only time the LDP have lost was when half of their MPs defected. You are drawing a very long bow to conclude that voters there were "supporting the US" or not.
Furthermore, given how little regard many Americans have for "international"issue when they vote, how come you think that pro or anti US was a factor in deciding the government?

More than 2000 Bundeswehr soldiers risk their life every day in Afghanistan. Germany has 300 troops in Enduring Freedom. Calling them weasels is dishonoring their sacrifices.

If we are so anti-American, how do you explain http://atlanticreview.org/archives/126-Germanys-aid-to-Katrinas-victims.html and http://atlanticreview.org/archives/134-German-relief-experts-at-work-in-New-Orleans.html

Hi Jorg, Here are some reasons why Schroeder, Zapatero, and Chirac are weasels: Just a sample of the reasons why these guys are the worst kind of backstabbers. It's a pity you guys didn't have the intestinal fortitude to elect leaders like Bush, Howard, and Blair.

"Schroeder, Zapatero, and Chirac are weasels"

They dared to disagree with the most powerful man in the in the universe and leader of the free world. Isn't that pretty untypical of weasels?

What do you think about Cheney's and Bush's service during the Vietnam war? They seem to be weasels.

Did you serve or are you just talking about sending other people's kids to war as Cheney and Bush did?

Dear Jorg

You seem to employ the classic lawyer's technique of arguing that
1. your client didn't shoot and
2. it happened in self-defense.
How else do you reconcile your statements that Germans and Schroeder are not weasels because they are not anti-american with your contention that being anti-american is not being a weasel anyway.
